Valley of Flowers – Hemkund – Badrinath

About Valley of Flowers…

The valley of flowers national park is the second core zone of the Nanda Devi biosphere reserve. The credit for the discovery of the valley of flowers generally goes to the British mountaineer Frank S.Smythe and R.L oldsworth who incidentally reached this valley after a successful expedition of mount Kamet in 1931. Fascinated by its beauty and grandeur Frank S. Smythe revisited this area in 1937 and published a book named “the valley of flowers” (1938). Frank S. Smythe writing made this valley world famous. The valley of flowers lies main valleys of Alaknanda and Lakshman Ganga in Garhwal Himalayas in chamoli district of uttaranchal. River pushpawati flows through this valley which has its source in the Tipra glacier which extends up to Gauri parvat peak. It is a flat valley 5 kms long and 2 kms wide. Its altitudinal range varies from 3200 to 6675 mts. The park is surrounded by gauri parvat (6590 mts) and ratovan (6126 mts) in the east. Kuntkhal (4430 mts in the west), in the west, Saptring (503Pm) in the south and Neelgiri Parvat (6479 mts) in the north.
